On leaving the railway station turn left past the Station Hotel on your right hand side. Continue over the footbridge that spans the dual carriageway until the Pomegranate Theatre is on your left. Follow the corner round until the Crooked Spire is on your right. Continue down the road towards Markham roundabout and you will see the Social Security building on the right hand side, on Lordsmill Street (the B6543).
The Assessment Centre is situated on the outskirts of the town centre near the main police station. There is a large multi-storey car park on Beetwell Street as well as a Pay and Display long stay car park situated in the two streets directly opposite the ‘Crooked Spire’.
Most local services will disembark near to the ‘Crooked Spire’ which is a very short walk from the Assessment Centre. Keeping the ‘Crooked Spire’ on your right, head down the road towards Markham roundabout. You will see the Social Security building on the right hand side, on Lordsmill Street (the B6543)
Notes from this Centre
Please note that although the Assessment Centre is in the same building as the DWP office, they do not share the same entrance – the entrance to the Assessment Centre is on Lordsmill Street (B6543).
Please note that the Assessment Centre is located on the fifth floor. There is access by lift but if an emergency evacuation of the building is required, such as a fire alarm, the lift cannot be used. There are 98 steps to the ground floor. If you think that you would have difficulty going down the stairs in the event of an emergency or would need assistance from another person, please ring the Appointments Helpdesk number on the accompanying letter at least two days before your appointment date so that we can make alternative arrangements for you.
On entering the building, you will see a small reception area where a security guard will issue you with a pass, then show you to the lift that will take you to the fifth floor.
